Share

March 28, 2025, Riga – High-level discussions took place at the Polish Embassy in Riga between representatives of Latvia and Poland’s defense and business sectors, marking a new stage of collaboration in the strategically important field of military technologies.

During the meeting, Edgars Zandmanis, Chairman of the Board of the International Defense Production Manufacturers Association (SAPRA), discussed cooperation opportunities with Lukasz Cudny, Head of the Political and Economic Department of the Polish Embassy, and J. Mārtiņš Skuja, Executive Director of the Polish–Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The discussions focused on promoting the development of innovative military technologies and attracting international investment.

Focus on Technology and Science
SAPRA highlighted its main areas of expertise, with special emphasis on the association’s experience in the development of high-precision optical equipment, photonics, and sensor systems. These technologies are becoming increasingly important, forming the foundation of national defense systems in an era where security and innovation go hand in hand.

One of the key topics of discussion was strengthening cooperation with Latvian universities and research centers. SAPRA has identified six strategic development areas that prioritize academic capacity, modern laboratories, and the involvement of highly qualified specialists. The Polish side expressed a similar approach, pointing to their ongoing collaboration with universities and research institutions to accelerate the implementation of modern technologies.

Investments and Government Support
Both parties agreed that the defense sector is gaining increasing importance not only in terms of national security but also as a priority in public investment and policy planning. Significant resources have already been allocated in both Latvia and Poland for the development and production of military technologies. However, bureaucratic obstacles remain a challenge. SAPRA welcomed the Latvian government's efforts to reduce these barriers, emphasizing the importance of a more flexible and open environment for local manufacturers and foreign investors alike.

Looking Ahead – Three Seas Initiative and Drone Summit
At the conclusion of the meeting, specific avenues for future cooperation were discussed. The Polish side extended an invitation for SAPRA representatives to participate in the Three Seas Initiative Summit, scheduled for the end of April in Warsaw. In turn, SAPRA highlighted the upcoming Drone Summit to be held in Riga at the end of May, noting its potential to become a key regional platform for collaboration in drone technologies, optical systems, and other defense solutions.

SAPRA continues to strengthen its role as an international player in the defense industry by promoting high-value cooperation between science, manufacturing, and innovation. These discussions in Riga signify not only political and economic dialogue, but also real steps toward a safer and more technologically advanced future.
